Foreign body Removal

This occurs when pets consume items that will not readily pass through their gastrointestinal tract. These items include clothing, toys, bedding or any other item that fails to pass, including human food products such as bones or trash. If not treated quickly, this can lead to perforation of the intestinal tract, which can quickly lead to peritonitis and sepsis.

Foreign Body Symptoms
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea or straining when trying to pass feces
  • Decreased appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Reluctance to be picked up or to walk

GDV (Gastric dilation-volvulus)

This is where the stomach begins to dilate and expand. The pressure in the stomach then begins to increase. The increased pressure and size of the stomach may have several severe consequences, including:

  • Prevention of adequate blood return to the heart from the abdomen
  • Loss of blood flow to the lining of the stomach
  • Rupture of the stomach wall
  • Pressure on the diaphragm preventing the lungs from adequately expanding leading to decreased ability to maintain normal breathing
GDV Symptoms
  • Swollen Stomach
  • Retching but unable to bring anything up
  • Restlessness
  • Straining when trying to pass feces
  • Increased respiratory rate
